A German club in Pattaya? Friendship, humour, art & culture.

Schlaraffia Castrum Siamesiae (383), the only Schlaraffia chapter in Asia: a German-speaking society of men for humour, art and friendship, in Thailand since 1973.

If you are looking for a German club in Pattaya or a German-speaking circle anywhere in Thailand, one where language, wit and culture fit together, you have found it. Castrum Siamesiae was founded in 1973 and is the only Schlaraffia chapter in Asia. We meet in Pattaya and welcome German-speaking men from Pattaya, Jomtien, Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonburi, Bangkok, the Isaan and the Eastern Seaboard of Thailand, as well as guests who are only in the country for a few days.

A German-speaking club, but not like the others

Anyone who lives in Thailand knows it: company is easy to find, but a circle where language, wit and culture fit together is rare. That is what we offer. Profession, titles and everyday stress stay outside; inside, what counts is the person, his humour and what he brings: a poem, a song, an anecdote or simply an attentive ear.

We are not a regulars’ table and not a business network. For more than fifty years our circle in Thailand has cultivated the same things: friendship, art and humour.

A chapter of its own kind

Castrum Siamesiae lives from change. Company representatives, embassy staff and travellers who are only in Thailand for a short time sit next to men who have lived here for decades. Some arrived as Schlaraffen, others became Schlaraffen here.

Our location helps: anyone travelling to Asia or Australia can easily stop by, and many Schlaraffen use the stopover for a visit to our Sawasdeeburg. The name Castrum Siamesiae means castle or camp of Siam, after the old name of the country.

Germans in Siam: a long story

A German-speaking circle in Thailand does not come out of nowhere. In 1858 the Hanseatic cities of Hamburg, Lübeck and Bremen concluded a trade treaty with Siam, in 1862 Prussia followed with a treaty of friendship, and merchants, consuls, railway engineers and architects came to the country. Our page Germans in Siam tells the story.

Where we meet: the Sawasdeeburg

We meet in the Sawasdeeburg at Restaurant Vespresso on Padtanakan Road in Nongprue near Pattaya. Parking is available. The current dates are on our events page.

New in Thailand? Then you are especially welcome. Many of our members once arrived in the country without knowing a single person.

🦉 Who it is for. Men who value humour, culture and genuine friendship – with German roots or simply a love of German language and culture, whatever their age or profession. A guest visit is free and without obligation.
