Frequently Asked Questions

Short, honest answers – all about a first visit to Schlaraffia in Pattaya

🦉 Thinking about coming along? Here are the questions we are asked most often. If yours is not among them, just write to us – we are happy to answer in person.

Does visiting as a guest cost anything?

No. Your first visits as a guest are free and entirely without obligation. You watch, take in a few evenings and then decide, in your own time, whether Schlaraffia is for you.

Do I have to become a member once I have visited?

No. A guest visit commits you to nothing at all. You can come once, come several times, or leave it there – entirely as you wish.

Can women take part?

Schlaraffia is a menʼs association; the members are men. Partners and guests are, however, warmly welcome at special, festive evenings. Just ask us which dates are suitable for that.

What should I wear as a guest?

Smart everyday clothes are perfectly fine – a jacket is appreciated but not required. As a guest you need not worry about anything; we tell you beforehand what to expect.

How does such an evening unfold?

The members meet for a convivial evening with a set, playful sequence: a welcome, short talks, music, humour and a relaxed close. Everything is taken with a wink – friendship, art and humour are what matter.

Do I have to perform something myself?

Not as a guest. You may simply watch and enjoy. Anyone who later finds pleasure in contributing something – a poem, a song, a short speech – is warmly invited to, but no one has to.

What language is it held in?

In German. Since the founding in 1859, German has been the common bond of all Schlaraffians worldwide – whatever the membersʼ nationality.

Who is Schlaraffia for – and who not?

For men who value humour, seek genuine conversation and enjoy the arts – regardless of profession, age or background. It is less suited to anyone looking mainly for business networking or political debate: both are deliberately left at the door.

How do I become a member?

There is no rush: come along as a guest a few times and get to know us. If both sides wish it, membership follows step by step. Schlaraffia is hard to explain – you have to experience it.
